Philippines Defends Scrutiny of China-Linked Education Programs

The Department of National Defense (DND) on Friday emphasized the necessity of intensifying scrutiny over foreign state-backed academic and cultural exchange programs, amid growing concerns about the expanding influence of Chinese state-linked institutions on local education. Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro stated that public scrutiny and institutional transparency regarding foreign state funding in local education are "fundamental duties of national governance." His remarks come in response to emerging concerns that the Chinese government is seeking to expand its influence through educational institutions and cultural centers within the Philippines. Teodoro highlighted the imperative for a more rigorous evaluation and oversight of such programs due to their potential implications for national security. Specifically, there are concerns about the risk of Chinese Communist Party ideology and propaganda infiltrating educational content. While the Philippine government maintains its openness to foreign investment and exchanges, it has signaled its readiness to take firm measures to protect national sovereignty and the interests of its citizens.
