GFDI Company Former Director, Others Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Scamming Over 2.4 Trillion VND

In Da Nang City, central Vietnam, the former director of GFDI Investment Consultancy Co., Co., Ltd. (GFDI Company) and four subordinates have been sentenced to life imprisonment in their first trial for defrauding assets exceeding a total of 2.4 trillion VND (approximately 140 billion JPY). The trial concerned a case where GFDI Company allegedly defrauded citizens of large sums of money by posing as an investment consultancy business. The Da Nang City People's Court, which delivered the verdict, found the defendants guilty of "fraudulent appropriation of property." In Vietnam, investment fraud cases have been on the rise in recent years, coinciding with economic growth. Scams promising high returns or soliciting investments in non-existent projects are particularly rampant, affecting numerous citizens. The government is intensifying its crackdown on such fraudulent activities, while also promoting public awareness and educational campaigns to counter increasingly sophisticated methods. The GFDI case can be seen as indicative of structural issues where some companies attempt to gain profits through illicit means, casting a shadow on Vietnam's economic development under its single-party system.
