DA Eyes Dairy Boost From Buffalo Lab

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Agriculture (DA) is investing in cutting-edge technology to increase the birth rate of female carabaos, aiming to significantly boost local dairy production. On Friday, the DA inaugurated the world's first laboratory exclusively dedicated to sex-sorting buffalo semen in Muñoz, Nueva Ecija. The facility, built with a P237.9-million investment, utilizes flow cytometry technology to promote the birth of more female carabaos. Carabaos are traditional draft animals in the Philippines, and their milk is known for its high nutritional value. However, traditional breeding methods often result in a higher probability of male offspring, posing a challenge in securing female animals for milk production. This new laboratory is expected to significantly improve the chances of female carabao births by using sex-sorted semen. This, in turn, is anticipated to increase the domestic supply of dairy products, potentially leading to higher farmer incomes and enhanced food security. The Philippines has long faced the challenge of increasing domestic dairy production, relying heavily on imports. This initiative is part of the government's strategy to reduce import dependency and foster the development of sustainable agriculture. The widespread adoption of this technology among farmers nationwide is expected to bring about a significant transformation in the country's dairy industry.
