Luzon, Visayas Face Renewed Air Pollution Due to Indonesian Forest Fires

Air quality in parts of Luzon and the Visayas has again turned unhealthy due to smoke from ongoing forest fires in Indonesia, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) reported. This marks a deterioration after a brief period of improvement, with the persistent fires in Indonesia continuing to impact the country's air quality. According to the DENR's air quality index, as of noon yesterday, air quality in Mimaropa was "very unhealthy." Meanwhile, Bicol and the rest of Luzon registered "fair" and "good" levels, respectively. Several areas in Central Visayas and Negros Island Region reported "unhealthy to sensitive groups" levels, while some locations were at "good" to "fair" levels. In addition, certain areas in Davao Region and Soccsksargen were at "very unhealthy" levels, with most of Caraga at "unhealthy to sensitive groups" levels. The rest of Mindanao remained at "good" to "fair" levels. The haze observed in some parts of the country has been attributed to smoke from the ongoing forest fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia. The DENR has advised residents in areas experiencing haze to limit outdoor exposure and wear good quality face masks when necessary. Individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions are strongly urged to remain indoors to avoid complications. This situation underscores the critical importance of addressing transboundary environmental issues. The Philippines, due to its geographical location, is directly susceptible to the impacts of forest fires in neighboring countries, highlighting the need for enhanced international cooperation and regional environmental management frameworks.
