Prabowo Administration's Economic Policy Faces Foundation Weakness

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto's administration has placed food security, energy self-sufficiency, and military modernization at the center of Indonesia’s national development agenda. Under the framework of the Asta Cita, these strategic and defensive sectors are expected to serve as the primary stepping stones toward transforming Indonesia into a welfare state. The underlying assumption is straightforward: physical security is the foundation for economic development. However, this approach faces criticism for lacking the concrete fiscal and economic foundations necessary for the transition to a welfare state. The Prabowo administration plans to mobilize domestic and international funding to drive investment in these priority sectors. However, a significant portion of these resources may rely on increased public debt or optimistic revenue enhancement measures. Large-scale expenditures, particularly in military modernization, are expected to place a considerable strain on the state's finances. Furthermore, ensuring the economic sustainability of these strategic sectors requires active private sector involvement and transparent governance. Currently, specific incentives or deregulation measures to attract private investment in these areas have not been clearly articulated. Indonesian economic experts have voiced concerns that the Prabowo administration's economic vision lacks the robust fiscal planning and actionable policies needed to achieve its ambitious goals. The path to a welfare state must be underpinned not only by enhanced defensive capabilities but also by sustainable economic growth and improved public welfare.
