Ratanakiri Governor Accused of Allowing Large-Scale Gambling Operations

In Cambodia's northeastern Ratanakiri province, allegations have emerged that the provincial police chief is tacitly allowing large-scale illegal gambling operations within his jurisdiction. According to reports from residents, these gambling sites are located in jungle areas along the border between O'Chum and Borkeo districts, specifically in the vicinity of Ting Chak and Tam villages in Borkeo district, and are frequented by a large number of patrons daily. Some residents have raised suspicions that the lax enforcement of laws or potential collusion with certain officials might be behind these activities. However, these allegations have not yet been officially confirmed and warrant further investigation. Previously, the Governor of Ratanakiri province had affirmed a policy of not allowing any gambling activities within the province's jurisdiction. Despite this, resident reports indicate that various forms of gambling, ranging from betting at coffee shops to cockfighting rings, Apaloung (coin toss), and Yuki (dice game), are still reportedly in operation. This situation highlights the structural challenges Cambodia faces in terms of public security and law enforcement effectiveness, as well as trust in the performance of public officials, particularly in border regions like Ratanakiri, where economic underdevelopment is sometimes cited as a factor contributing to illegal activities.
