Cambodian Deputy PM Urges Youth to Choose Job Market-Aligned Specializations

Deputy Prime Minister Sok Chenda Sophea has strongly urged young people, especially those who have just passed their high school diploma examinations, to carefully consider their choice of specialization. He emphasized the importance of aligning personal interests and abilities with the demands of the future job market to secure employment opportunities and career growth. Speaking at the 2026 National Employment and Productivity Fair held at the Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Center on September 12, the Deputy Prime Minister stated that labor demand projections up to 2030 are crucial information to guide young people in understanding labor market trends and selecting fields that align with their preferences and can meet current and future employment needs. He highlighted that for the next 0-3 years, key in-demand specializations include accounting and taxation, management and administration, architecture and urban planning, environmental protection technology, computer and mobile applications, law, food processing, textiles, and crop and animal production. For the 3-5 year period, demand will increasingly focus on AI, electronics and automation, databases and networks, mechanics, electricity and energy, as well as other technical skills. For the 5-10 year period, he indicated that high-level skills will become more critical, such as waste management, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, laboratory technology, environmental protection technology, and automation. These trends suggest that Cambodia's labor market is evolving from relying heavily on labor to emphasizing productivity, specialization, technology, and high-value-added work. The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that in the context of a changing job market, young people should not choose specializations based solely on popularity or by following others. Instead, they must understand their own capabilities and gather information about labor force needs to properly plan their studies and careers. Possessing skills that the market requires will enhance competitiveness and increase opportunities for quality employment. Concurrently, he noted that young people also have options through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), which is being modernized and closely linked with the private sector and enterprises. Such training can provide theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and internship experience, which are vital for entering the job market. The 2026 National Employment and Productivity Fair was held from September 12-13, featuring 150 major companies that offered over 35,000 job opportunities for immediate application and on-site interviews.
