Laos Strengthens Economic Ties with Thailand and Vietnam

Laos is showing moves to further strengthen economic ties with neighboring countries. Vietnam National Chemical Group (Vinachem), one of Vietnam's leading state-owned industrial conglomerates, is showcasing a wide range of products at the Laos-Vietnam Trade Fair 2026 (VIETLAO EXPO 2026), held from July 16–20 at the Lao-ITECC Exhibition Center in Vientiane Capital, as part of efforts to expand its presence in the Lao market and strengthen bilateral economic cooperation. This indicates Laos' emphasis on its economic relationship with Vietnam. Additionally, promoting trade and investment with Thailand is a key pillar of Laos' economic policy. However, challenges are also emerging domestically. In Tha Bak village, Khamkeut District, Borikhamxay Province, a landslide caused by days of heavy rainfall resulted in the deaths of three people, including a mother and her two children. This highlights the importance of addressing natural disasters in infrastructure development and urban planning. Meanwhile, poverty reduction efforts are progressing in Attapeu Province, with authorities announcing that between 2021 and 2025, 30,838 families have been lifted above the poverty line, freeing 88.32% of households from poverty. This demonstrates that development initiatives in rural areas are yielding certain results. Furthermore, Laos' Deputy Minister of Public Works and Transport participated in the United Nations Summit on the Mid-term Review of the New Urban Agenda in New York, where delegates reviewed global progress on sustainable urban development and endorsed a political declaration. This signifies Laos' participation in the international framework for urban development and its awareness of global challenges. The Residence of France in Vientiane welcomed over 400 guests on the occasion of French National Day, bringing together representatives of Lao authorities, the diplomatic corps, the business community, civil society, and the French community. This suggests Laos is also working to build international relationships.
