26 locals killed in Myaing within two months of Myanmar junta offensives

Ongoing Myanmar junta offensives over the past two months in Myaing Township, Magway Region, have killed 26 local residents, according to local sources and regional organizations. On the morning of 22 July, artillery fired indiscriminately by junta forces stationed in Thinma village landed and exploded in Wetpho village, killing two residents. According to records compiled by the Anyar Myay Civil Society Organization (Myaing), the junta column killed 24 other individuals — including elderly people, people with mental health conditions, and women — during its operations in the township. While the recorded death toll stands at 26, the organization said actual casualties could be higher, as communication remains cut off for several residents. The victims include one each from Thazi, Hninsi Kan, Wetpote, Kone, Kannet, Myin Koe Thit, Kaing Taw Ma, and War Yin Chyaing villages; two each from Kunlat, Meiktila, and Than Chaung villages; and five each from Htauk Shar Pin and Bawton villages. Local organizations have urged residents to remain vigilant, reporting that the junta column torched Thinma village on the morning of 22 July before departing in the afternoon to advance into nearby areas.At least 180 homes across the villages have been destroyed by arson. Since the military operations began in June, residents from at least 14 villages have been forced to flee their homes.
