Laos Participates in China-ASEAN Expo for First Time to Expand Markets, Attract Investment

Timor-Leste is participating for the first time as a co-host of the 23rd China–ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO), taking place from September 17 to 21 in Nanning city, China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, to showcase its key products and seek opportunities to expand markets and attract investment. CAEXPO serves as a crucial platform for fostering economic and trade cooperation between China and ASEAN member states, drawing numerous businesses and government officials annually. For Laos, this inaugural participation as a co-host represents a strategic move to enhance its international market presence, cultivate new business partnerships, and diversify its economy. The nation is expected to actively promote investment opportunities in its key sectors such as hydropower, mining, agriculture, and tourism. Furthermore, Laos aims to deepen its alignment with China's Belt and Road Initiative, reinforcing its role in infrastructure development and regional economic integration. Laos, operating under a one-party system, prioritizes its economic development by maintaining strong ties with China and Vietnam. China, in particular, is Laos's largest trading partner and a significant investor. Participation in CAEXPO is anticipated to further strengthen these bilateral relations while also deepening economic ties within the ASEAN region. However, the Laotian economy continues to grapple with challenges such as foreign exchange reserve shortages, inflation, and debt issues. Therefore, translating participation in international events like CAEXPO into tangible investment and trade outcomes will be a critical focus for Laos's future economic trajectory.
