CNO/CNDF chairman dismissed for secret meeting with Myanmar junta’s NSPNC representatives

The chairman of the Chin National Organization/Chin National Defence Force (CNO/CNDF), based in Falam Township, Chin State, has been dismissed from his post for holding an unauthorized separate meeting with representatives of the junta-established National Solidarity and Peacemaking Negotiation Committee (NSPNC) in New Delhi, India, sources said. The meeting became public after junta chief Min Aung Hlaing named the CNO/CNDF among 13 armed groups his peace committee has held talks with, during a state address on 31 July. The CNO subsequently removed the chairman over the unauthorized meeting. “The chairman is the Commander-in-Chief, who holds the ultimate responsibility for the entire policy of the organization. Because he is accountable for this meeting as well as other policy matters, our organization took action to dismiss him,” Salai Tin Mi Htut, spokesperson for the CNO/CNDF, told Mizzima. He declined to disclose the identities of other attendees or further details, saying they are personal matters.Salai Tin Mi Htut wrote on social media that the CNO/CNDF does not represent any single ethnic group or individual, and that the revolution is ongoing. He said the revolution will continue until consensus, unity, and transparent discussions among all Chin people are achieved. According to a statement released by the CNO on the night of 3 August, the separate meeting between certain officials and junta representatives was conducted of their own accord, without any recognition, decision, or agreement from the organization’s Central Council (CC), Central Executive Committee (CEC), Political Steering Committee (PSC), or Defence Council (DC). Following an investigation into the unauthorized meeting, the chairman accepted primary responsibility and tendered his resignation. The Central Council subsequently approved his dismissal, according to the statement. The statement added that the matters discussed during the meeting do not represent the official stance, decisions, or policies of the CNO, and that no political or military agreements, commitments, or understandings were reached with the NSPNC representatives. The CNO affirmed it will not engage in unilateral talks or political negotiations with the junta without the consensus and collective decision of fellow members, including the Chin Brotherhood, the Interim Chin National Consultative Council (ICNCC), and allied revolutionary forces. Separately, the Falam Clan Guardians Association released a statement on 3 August expressing support for the meeting, saying it aimed to benefit the development of the Falam region and the future of the Falam people. The association said it supports negotiations and peace efforts between the CNO and junta officials to facilitate the rehabilitation of Falam Township, enabling local residents to return home safely and make a peaceful living. The CNO/CNDF said it will continue working alongside allied revolutionary forces to prioritize organizational unity, its constitution, policies, and revolutionary interests, aiming to meet public trust and achieve the revolution’s ultimate goals: establishing a federal democratic system and completely ending military dictatorship. The Chin National Organization/Chin National Defence Force (CNO/CNDF) was founded on 13 April 2021 and is currently conducting armed resistance against the junta in Falam Township, northern Chin State, and the Kalay-Kabaw region of Sagaing Region, in cooperation with allied forces.
