Vietnam Eyes Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership with China
Vietnam's Chief of the General Staff emphasized strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership with China as a top priority. Both nations aim to reinforce their political foundations and expand economic, trade, and investment cooperation, highlighting Vietnam's focus on its relationship with Beijing within its one-party system.
General Nguyen Tan Cuong, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army and Deputy Minister of National Defence, affirmed that Vietnam consistently regards strengthening its Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership with China as a top priority. This underscores Vietnam's emphasis on its relationship with China within the framework of its one-party system and its efforts to reinforce political foundations. Chinese Ambassador He Wei noted that over a century of development, both sides have remained resilient amidst changing global circumstances, continuously strengthening Party building to reinforce their leadership and provide the political foundation for socialism building in each country. This highlights a shared commitment to the Party's central role in national development. Prime Minister Le Minh Hung recommended that both sides step up all-level exchanges and meetings, especially high-level ones, make full use of existing cooperation mechanisms, expand collaboration in economy, trade, and investment, and effectively implement the EU–Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA). This indicates Vietnam's strategy to diversify economic ties while deepening engagement with the EU for growth. In parallel, Vietnam has agreed with Laos to enhance cooperation in finance, agriculture, and natural resources and environmental management. A Memorandum of Understanding on overseas Vietnamese and Lao affairs was signed, with Laos set to send a delegation to study preparations for the World Conference of Overseas Vietnamese in December 2026. These moves reflect Vietnam's strategic approach to managing regional relationships and maintaining its influence. Party General Secretary and State President To Lam stressed the significance of recovered remains, reaffirming the nation's tradition of remembering those who served. This contributes to domestic unity and patriotism, reinforcing the legitimacy of nation-building under the Party's leadership. Overall, Vietnam is pursuing a multifaceted diplomatic and domestic strategy, prioritizing its strategic partnership with China while simultaneously seeking economic growth, deepening regional cooperation, and ensuring domestic political stability and national cohesion.
