Southern Vietnam Braces for Heavy Rains, Landslides

The National Civil Defense Steering Committee has requested provinces and cities in the southern and south-central coastal regions to proactively implement measures to respond to heavy rains, floods, flash floods, landslides, tornadoes, lightning, and hail expected in the coming days. Meteorological authorities have issued flood warnings for rivers in the North and Thanh Hoa province, and announced that heavy rain is forecast for areas from Nghe An to Hue City. Southern Vietnam is expected to enter a heavy rainfall season in the coming days. In this region, damage to infrastructure and impacts on agricultural production due to heavy rains have been reported in the past. In particular, areas along rivers and on slopes face increased risks of landslides, necessitating strengthened evacuation plans for residents and early warning systems. The Vietnamese government is focusing on infrastructure development and disaster prevention education as part of its climate change response. The response to the current heavy rains presents an opportunity to further enhance preparedness for the natural disaster risks Vietnam faces.
