Jakarta Considers New Parking Tariffs Amid Public Concern

The Jakarta provincial government (Pemprov DKI Jakarta) is currently deliberating on a plan to adjust parking tariffs for vehicles in the capital. However, no decision has yet been made regarding the specific new rates. Governor of DKI Jakarta, Anies Baswedan, confirmed the discussions, stating that the provincial government is considering various factors before setting new parking fees. "The Jakarta government will certainly consider many things in making decisions, including what a reasonable price is," he said. Baswedan emphasized that the discussion on increasing parking tariffs does not mean that new rates have already been set. He also denied the Rp 60,000 per hour figure that has recently been widely discussed by the public. "Rp 60,000? That is not a figure from the Jakarta government at all. I myself don't know where that number came from," he stated. He reiterated that the plan to increase parking tariffs in Jakarta is still in the discussion phase, and therefore, no specific amount has been determined. "Well, until today there has been no decision whatsoever about it. I only learned about the Rp 60,000 figure when it went viral," he revealed. Previously, Chairman of the Special Committee for Parking at the DKI Jakarta Regional Representative Council (DPRD), Ahmad Lukman Jupiter, revealed a proposal for changes to parking tariffs using a zoning system. Areas with high economic value would potentially be subject to higher tariffs. Several areas, such as SCBD, Menteng, Senayan, and parts of South Jakarta, are mentioned as potentially falling into high-tariff zones. The proposed tariff threshold could reach Rp 60,000 per hour. However, Jupiter himself deemed this figure to be too high and potentially burdensome for the public. "So, in my opinion, it is too burdensome for the public. It's unreasonable, it's absurd," he said. According to Jupiter, increasing parking tariffs is not the only way to increase Jakarta's Regional Original Revenue (PAD). He believes there are many other revenue sources that can be optimized without burdening the public. "The point is, that's not how you increase PAD. There are still many things we can do from what I mentioned earlier," he explained. "It's better to find easier ways. We shouldn't be squeezing the public in the current situation," he added.
