West Java Deputy Governor Expresses Concern Over ASN's Online Gambling Transactions Up to Rp800 Million

West Java Deputy Governor Erwan Setiawan expressed surprise and concern over findings related to the involvement of state civil servants (ASN) within the West Java Provincial Government environment in online gambling (judol) activities, with transactions reportedly reaching up to Rp800 million in one year. Data disclosed by the Financial Transaction Reporting and Analysis Center (PPATK) has triggered deep concern from the West Java Provincial Government, as the total value of illegal transactions involving state officials at provincial and district/city levels has now reached tens of billions of rupiah annually and continues to increase. "I received complete data based on name and address. There are even ASN whose transaction value reaches hundreds of millions of rupiah to around Rp800 million in a year. This is certainly very worrying," said Erwan in Bandung on Tuesday, July 7, as reported by ANTARA. Erwan explained that West Java, with its largest population in Indonesia reaching around 51 million people, is now plagued by crucial social issues. Online gambling and online lending (pinjol) practices, he stated, are no longer just targeting low-income individuals but have massively penetrated the ranks of officials, members of the TNI, Polri, and ASN. Although they possess detailed data including names and addresses, Erwan emphasized that the West Java Provincial Government has chosen to keep the identities of the involved ASN confidential. Instead, disciplinary measures will be implemented through a gradual internal coaching mechanism led by the Inspectorate to serve as a deterrent. "We will ask for gradual coaching, calling the concerned ASN, heads of regional units, to heads of regions to strengthen supervision. Don't let cases like this continue to increase every year," Erwan urged. The West Java Provincial Government has also requested intervention and input from the Indonesian Ombudsman to address other public service scandals and to evaluate the implementation of the New Student Admission Selection (SPMB) to prevent recurring patterns of maladministration. Responding to this phenomenon, Member of the Indonesian Ombudsman, Maneger Nasution, assessed that the involvement of state apparatus in the vicious circle of gambling and online loans tarnishes public ethics and has the potential to trigger maladministration in public services. "This is not only a legal issue, but also an ethical issue. The state apparatus should be an example, so that this issue is also the concern of the Ombudsman," said Maneger, emphasizing the readiness of the West Java representative Ombudsman to strengthen oversight and governance.
