PhilHealth disburses over P210 billion for medical claims in first half

The Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) paid a total of P210.09 billion for medical claims during the first half of the year, from January to June. Data from the state insurer revealed that hemodialysis was the top medical procedure it reimbursed. PhilHealth stated that it paid P48.76 billion for hemodialysis claims during the period. It also disbursed P4.88 billion for caesarian section claims, P3.5 billion for chemotherapy administration, and P3.15 billion for facility-based emergency/outpatient emergency care benefits. Other significant payments included P3.11 billion for intensity modulated treatment, P2.93 billion for animal bite claims, and P2.81 billion for the expanded newborn package. Claims for normal spontaneous delivery packages reached P2.73 billion, outpatient HIV/AIDS packages amounted to P2.46 billion, and maternity care packages received P2.24 billion. For Z benefits claims, which cover severe and catastrophic illnesses requiring prolonged hospitalization and high-cost treatments, the agency paid P1.82 billion. These disbursements underscore the operational scale of the national health insurance program and the substantial healthcare expenditures incurred by the population. The high volume of claims, particularly for chronic conditions like hemodialysis, may reflect broader societal trends such as an aging population and the increasing prevalence of lifestyle-related diseases.
