Cambodia Pledges Deeper Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Amidst Regional Challenges

AKP Phnom Penh, August 5, 2026 -- Cambodia pledged Wednesday to deepen regional dialogue and advance practical cooperation to ensure sustainable development across the Mekong-Lancang sub-region, according to the Asian Vision Institute (AVI). Speaking at the launch of the 2nd Mekong-Lancang Peace Boat Programme, AVI President Dr. Chheng Kimlong highlighted that while the sub-region boasts rich cultural diversity and economic potential, it faces increasingly complex transboundary challenges – including climate change, water resource management, environmental degradation, disaster risks, and shifting geopolitical dynamics. "Because these challenges transcend national borders, they demand a collective response built on trust, dialogue, and partnership," Dr. Chheng Kimlong said, citing the core principles established at the launch of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) in Sanya in March 2016 and reaffirmed during the 4th LMC Leaders' Meeting in 2023. Building on the success of its inaugural phase, the second Peace Boat initiative provides a collaborative platform for government officials, policymakers, researchers, and young scholars to exchange insights and generate actionable policy recommendations for regional peace, resilience, and shared prosperity. Under the project, participants will engage in consultative workshops covering critical sub-regional priorities, including peace and security, small-state diplomacy, Southeast Asian foreign policy, water resource governance, digital diplomacy, trade integration, and crisis response.
