Cambodia Women's Dormitory Construction Progresses, Aiding Disadvantaged Students and Human Resource Development
Construction is advancing on a modern dormitory for female students in Cambodia, aimed at supporting disadvantaged youth. Donated by former Prime Minister Hun Sen and his wife, the facility will provide a safe and comfortable living environment for students facing economic hardship, enhancing their access to higher education and contributing to the government's human resource development and gender equality strategies.
Construction is underway for a modern dormitory for female students from disadvantaged backgrounds in Chroy Changvar district, Phnom Penh. The facility, a donation from former Prime Minister Hun Sen and his wife Bun Rany Hun Sen, is nearing completion. On September 2, 2026, Samdech Kittisethpundit Men Sam An, Senior Advisor to the King and President of the Cambodian Women's Association for Peace and Development, met with the 165 engineers and construction workers involved in the project. Ing Kantha Pavi, Minister of Women's Affairs, reported that the construction has reached 70% completion. Preparations are also being made for management structures, additional training programs, and the selection of eligible students, including those from poor families, individuals with disabilities, orphans, children of military personnel, refugee families, ethnic minorities, and indigenous groups. Samdech Kittisethpundit Men Sam An conveyed warm greetings from former Prime Minister Hun Sen and his wife, emphasizing that this state-of-the-art dormitory will serve as a safe, warm, and comfortable residence for impoverished female students from remote provinces pursuing higher education in the capital. The dormitory is expected to alleviate financial burdens for families and align with the government's "Pentagonal Strategy" Phase I, particularly focusing on human resource development and technical and vocational training. It is also anticipated to significantly promote gender equality, reduce female student dropout rates, and create golden opportunities for women to access higher education, thereby nurturing future national leaders. During the visit, Samdech Kittisethpundit Men Sam An presented gifts to the 165 individuals, including 50,000 Riel (approximately $12.50 USD) in cash, 10 kg of rice, a case of instant noodles, a bottle of fish sauce, a bottle of soy sauce, a krama (traditional scarf), and a bottle of mineral water each.
