From 'Livestream Showdowns' to Legal Trouble: Vietnamese Influencers Arrested

In Bac Ninh province, northern Vietnam, three prominent TikTokers—Khánh Sky (real name: Nguyễn Văn Hợi), Vua Quạt (real name: Trần Đình Tiệp), and Hồ Văn Khoa—have been arrested and prosecuted on charges of public disorder and infringing upon the legitimate rights and interests of the state and individuals. The case highlights the potential legal repercussions of aggressive online behavior. The legal entanglement began in late July when Vua Quạt, Huấn Hoa Hồng (a related figure mentioned but not directly prosecuted in this instance), and Hồ Văn Khoa engaged in online provocations. These influencers had garnered significant followings through their videos and livestreams, which often touched upon daily life and sometimes included vulgar content. The situation escalated when Huấn Hoa Hồng challenged viewers on a livestream to donate to flood victims, promising to triple any amount donated. Vua Quạt responded by transferring one billion VND to support those affected by floods in Lai Châu province. However, Huấn Hoa Hồng later refused to fulfill his promise, stating he did not want to turn charity into a bet. This led to frequent and heated exchanges, with Khánh Sky joining in, resulting in public verbal abuse and threats. On July 29, Khánh Sky, along with Hồ Văn Khoa and others, visited Vua Quạt's workshop in Tam Giang commune, Bac Ninh province, to livestream. During the broadcast, Khánh Sky repeatedly hurled insults and threats, stating, "At worst, I'll go to jail, why should I be afraid?" In response, Vua Quạt filed a complaint against Khánh Sky and Hồ Văn Khoa. Huấn Hoa Hồng also filed a defamation complaint against Vua Quạt, adding further complexity to the situation. Initial investigations by the Bac Ninh Provincial Police revealed that these individuals intentionally posted fabricated information and content that harmed reputations to attract views and increase their influence on social media. Khánh Sky admitted, "The more I cursed, the more views I got, and the more people watched, so I cursed more and livestreamed more." Vua Quạt claimed the events "stemmed from being provoked" and acknowledged that much of the information he shared was unverified, stating, "I just thought I'd talk casually for fun, I didn't expect the consequences to be so big." This series of arrests and prosecutions serves as a stark reminder that cyberspace is not a "free zone" exempt from legal consequences.
