Cambodia Enhances Water Management Amid Heavy Rainfall Warnings

On the morning of Thursday, September 24, 2026, H.E. Thor Cheath, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, led a working group to inspect the water situation along the Prek Tnaot River basin, from the Kompong Tuol 7 January Dam area, through canal 78, the Bati River, to the Kompong Chom area surrounding the Techo International Airport, within the geographical areas of Kandal and Takeo provinces. H.E. the Minister stated that based on the on-site inspection, there is currently no risk of flooding in the areas surrounding the capital. However, he emphasized that relevant institutions and local authorities should continuously enhance their attention and preparedness for all circumstances to respond to flood disasters, including flash floods. H.E. the Minister also instructed the leadership at the frontline and technical officials of the relevant specialized departments to continue to pay close attention to monitoring weather conditions, rainfall, water levels, and river flow between the upper and lower sections of the Prek Tnaot River. He specifically stressed the importance of managing water gates to strengthen water management and reduce the risks of natural disasters. It is worth noting that the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology has issued a notification regarding the weather situation in Cambodia, which is being affected by a low-pressure system over the western Pacific Ocean that has developed into the 26th storm, named Surigae. This is causing continuous rainfall, and high vigilance is required to prevent various dangers that may arise from phenomena such as lightning, thunder, and strong winds. Source: AKP Khmer
