New Landfill to Operate in Phnom Penh's Outskirts from January 2027

Phnom Penh is set to enhance its waste management capabilities with the upcoming operation of a new landfill in Toul Prek village, Ang Snoul district, starting January 1, 2027. This facility will replace the existing landfill in Dangkao district, aiming to improve environmental conditions and increase waste processing capacity for the capital. The new landfill spans 143 hectares, with its first phase developed to international standards. Hout Hai, Deputy Governor of Phnom Penh, announced this during a meeting of the Phnom Penh Municipal Council. He noted that while the waste collection and transportation services generate approximately $2 million USD per month, the operation currently incurs a deficit due to higher expenses. Nevertheless, waste collection has significantly increased to about 4,100 tons daily, a substantial rise from the previous 2,700 tons per day under a single company. Beyond waste management, Phnom Penh has also made strides in other areas. The crackdown on online scams has been effective, attributed to proactive district-level efforts and public cooperation. Furthermore, the city received an award from the World Health Organization (WHO) for its efforts in promoting traffic safety and enhancing urban mobility, health, and reducing inequalities in transportation. Chub Khon, a member of the Phnom Penh Municipal Council, commended the Phnom Penh authorities for their work in maintaining security, order, combating scams, and ensuring environmental hygiene, particularly during the recent high school examinations.
