Vietnam's Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Expelled from Party

The Secretariat of the Communist Party of Vietnam's Central Committee decided on July 28 to expel Hoang Trung, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment, from the party due to severe violations. This decision followed a proposal from the Central Inspection Committee, which concluded that Trung's violations had caused "extremely serious consequences." Also facing party expulsion are Duong Thanh Trung, former Deputy Secretary of the Bac Lieu Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; Do Truong Giang, Director of the Lao Cai Provincial Department of Industry and Trade; Nguyen The Minh, former Party Secretary of Binh Lieu commune and Secretary of the Quang Ninh Provincial Youth Union; and Nguyen Phuong Thao, former Secretary of the Quang Ninh Provincial Youth Union. All were found to have degenerated in political ideology, morality, and lifestyle, and violated regulations of the Party, laws of the State, rules on what party members must not do, and the responsibility to set an example. The Secretariat stated that the violations by these individuals resulted in "extremely serious consequences," causing public indignation and having a "very bad impact" on the prestige of the Party organization, localities, and their working agencies and units. The Secretariat decided to expel all of them from the Party and requested relevant authorities to promptly and synchronously implement administrative sanctions in conjunction with party discipline. Deputy Minister Hoang Trung, 57, from Yen Bai province, holds a doctorate. He was appointed Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development in June 2023. After the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development merged with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, he has served as Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment since February 2025. Previously, he held various positions within the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, including specialist, deputy head of department, head of department, deputy director, and director of the Plant Protection Department. The Communist Party of Vietnam has been conducting a vigorous anti-corruption campaign since 2016 under the leadership of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, leading to the punishment of numerous high-ranking officials and business executives.
