Sun PhuQuoc Airways Expands International Network, Boosting Phu Quoc's Global Connectivity
Vietnam's nascent airline, Sun PhuQuoc Airways, is expanding its international routes following the completion of a new runway at Phu Quoc International Airport. This move aims to enhance Phu Quoc's global appeal as a sought-after island destination and attract more international tourists.
Sun PhuQuoc Airways, the airline of Sun Group, is expanding its international route network, leveraging the completion of a new runway at Phu Quoc International Airport. This strategic move aims to enhance the global profile of Phu Quoc, a southern island resort destination gaining international attention, and boost its appeal to tourists worldwide. Runway No. 2 at Phu Quoc International Airport, measuring 3,300 meters in length and 45 meters in width, has been constructed parallel to the existing runway. Pavement and markings are complete, and the project is undergoing final technical inspections. The lighting system is being tested at full intensity during nighttime operations. This infrastructure upgrade is expected to facilitate increased flight frequencies and the operation of larger aircraft, significantly improving accessibility to Phu Quoc. Sun PhuQuoc Airways launched its operations in October 2025 and commenced commercial flights the following month. The airline entered the Vietnamese aviation market during a period of post-pandemic recovery, but also faces challenges such as rising costs, fleet limitations, talent shortages, infrastructure pressures, and intensifying service competition. Despite these hurdles, the newcomer has begun to make its mark on the market in less than a year. Phu Quoc Island was ranked ninth on Expedia's list of top travel destinations this year, alongside Palawan in the Philippines, making it one of the only island destinations in Southeast Asia to be recognized. Expedia compiled its rankings based on search trends, traveler interest, and the growth potential of island destinations. Sun PhuQuoc Airways' expansion of international services is poised to further elevate Phu Quoc's global allure and attract a greater number of international visitors. In recent years, Vietnam has focused on promoting its tourism industry alongside its economic growth, with significant investments and infrastructure development in resort areas like Phu Quoc. The expansion of Sun PhuQuoc Airways' international routes can be seen as part of Vietnam's broader economic diversification strategy under its one-party system. Amidst complex relations with China, Vietnam aims to strengthen the international competitiveness of its tourism and service sectors as a new pillar of economic growth, and the recent move by the airline is a tangible manifestation of this objective.
