Two Suspects Arrested for Smuggling Medical Supplies and Cosmetics Across Cambodian-Thai Border

In Malai District, Banteay Meanchey Province, Cambodia, two suspects have been arrested for smuggling medical supplies and cosmetics illegally imported from Thailand. Border protection forces apprehended the individuals and seized a significant quantity of goods on the afternoon and evening of August 26, 2026, at informal border crossings within the district. According to reports, a consignment of cosmetic products, identified as 'Elracle,' was discovered during a patrol at 9:50 PM on August 8, 2026. This shipment consisted of seven large boxes, equivalent to 84 smaller boxes, containing 1,008 individual units. The goods were illegally transported across the border from Thailand into Cambodia near the border stream in Kandal Village, Ouslao Commune, Malai District, facing Phan Seuk Village in Aranyaprathet District, Sa Kaeo Province, Thailand. The owner of these goods evaded capture, leaving the items to be handed over to the Malai District police for further legal proceedings. Separately, a bust involving cough syrup was conducted at 4:30 PM on August 8, 2026. This operation led to the arrest of two individuals and the seizure of six cases of cough syrup, totaling 1,150 bottles. These were also imported from Thailand into Cambodia, found at a location in Thomai Village, Ouslao Commune, Malai District, Banteay Meanchey Province, facing Ban Non Village in Phan Seuk Commune, Aranyaprathet District, Sa Kaeo Province, Thailand. Following the operations, the suspects and the seized goods were handed over to the Malai District Gendarmerie for further legal procedures. Mr. Svay, the Governor of Malai District, stated that as the head of the unified command in Malai District, he has implemented a strict plan utilizing full forces for patrols and installing cameras at key points along the informal border crossings to prevent illegal activities, in line with directives from the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Interior. He further mentioned that he has assigned a district official to conduct regular inspections of markets and shops to identify substandard products and those illegally imported from neighboring countries. Mr. Svay added that if traders continue to engage in illegal imports, they will be apprehended, noting that arrests are being made gradually. He recalled that despite the tense situation along the Cambodian-Thai border, with military forces facing each other, and strict measures by Cambodian leadership against illegal cross-border traders and criminals, as well as a public boycott of Thai products, traders are still seizing opportunities to smuggle goods illicitly.
