Mekong Flood Causes Widespread Erosion in Kampong Cham, Affecting Homes

During the 2026 flood season of the Mekong River, extensive riverbank erosion has occurred in Cambodia's Kampong Cham province, affecting over 3,000 meters of riverbanks and damaging numerous residential homes. According to Mr. Noun Noy, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Kampong Cham Provincial Disaster Management Committee, the flood season has impacted six districts and municipalities, equivalent to 13 communes and Sangkats. The riverbank collapses have reached a total length of 12,963 meters, with 185 homes belonging to citizens facing the threat of erosion, and 53 homes already dismantled and relocated. Mr. Noy further stated that the provincial administration and the provincial disaster management committee are paying close attention to this riverbank erosion disaster, collaborating with local authorities to monitor the situation. According to future plans, the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology and relevant experts have agreed to prepare for the repair of the eroded riverbanks in 2027. This includes repairing 200 meters of riverbank in Preah Andong Commune, Stueng Trang District; 600 meters in Ruessei Srok Commune and 600 meters in Koh Andet Commune, both in Srey Santhor District; and another section of 100 meters in Stoeung Commune, Kang Meas District. Concurrently, a report from the Provincial Disaster Management Committee also indicated that agricultural crops suffered significant damage due to the flood situation, with over 756 hectares of farmland affected, including rice and other mixed crops.
