Ho Chi Minh City Startled by Sudden Thunder as Weather Shifts Abruptly

In southern Vietnam, particularly in Ho Chi Minh City, a sudden rumble of thunder echoed across the sky past noon on the 20th, startling many residents. This phenomenon occurred despite clear skies, drawing attention as an unusual weather event. According to the Southern Hydrometeorological Station, the thunder is attributed to the rapid development of cumulonimbus clouds. This is believed to be caused by a tropical convergence zone extending from the south-central to southern regions, with the southwest monsoon weakening while wind convergence intensifies in the southern areas. Weather radar and satellite imagery confirmed the development of cumulonimbus clouds across a wide area, including multiple districts within Ho Chi Minh City, as well as An Giang, Can Tho, Dong Nai, and Lam Dong provinces, accompanied by rain, thunder, and lightning. The meteorological department reported that the thunder was caused by the strong development of cumulonimbus clouds. The rain and thunderstorms are due to the tropical convergence zone with its axis passing through the south-central and southern regions, coupled with a weak to moderate southwest monsoon and strong wind convergence over the southern region. Satellite imagery, weather radar, and lightning detection systems show that cumulonimbus clouds are developing and causing rain with thunderstorms and lightning in various areas. These include Dien Hong Ward (near Thong Nhat Stadium), Binh Tan Ward (Gia An 115 Hospital), Thuan Giao Ward (Thuan Giao Residential Area, Vinamilk Milk Powder Factory); Phu Loi Ward (Phu Loi Prison Historical Site), Vinh Loc Commune (Hamlet 1, Hamlet 2), Tan Vinh Loc Commune (Hamlet 74, An Ha Industrial Park), Dong Thanh Commune, Hoc Mon Commune (Ward 1), Xuan Thoi Son Commune, Ba Diem Commune (Trung Chanh 1 Hamlet), Dau Tieng Commune (Chien Thang Hamlet, Ward 4B). In the southern region, rain-bearing cumulonimbus clouds are developing strongly in An Giang province in Dong Hoa Commune, Dong Thai Commune, An Bien Commune, Tay Yen Commune, Vinh Thong Ward, Son Kien Commune, My Thuan Commune, Tan Hoi Commune, Tan Hiep Commune, Thoai Son Commune, Tri Ton Commune, Nui Cam Commune. In Can Tho City, in Thanh An Commune. In Dong Nai province, in Phuoc An Commune, Dai Phuoc Commune, Xuan Hoa Commune. In Lam Dong province, in Suoi Kiet Commune, Ham Thuan Commune, Tanh Linh Commune, Hong Son Commune, Dong Kho Commune, Dam Rong 2 Commune, cumulonimbus clouds are developing strongly. Rainfall is forecast to be between 15-30mm within the next 3 hours. During thunderstorms, there is a risk of tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong gusts of wind approximately level 5-7 (8-17 m/s), with heavy rain causing localized flooding. Regarding the weather forecast for today in the Southern region, the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting stated that on September 20th, both day and night, the Southern region and Lam Dong will experience moderate rain and thunderstorms with rainfall amounts of 20-40mm, with some areas receiving heavy to very heavy rain exceeding 100mm (rain concentrated in the afternoon and evening). As of 8:15 PM on September 18th, rain was still occurring in Ho Chi Minh City. Water from multiple directions flowed towards Ly Te Xuyen Street, near Linh Dong Street, creating a strong current that knocked over many vehicles, making it unsafe for people to pass.
