Sihanoukville Cracks Down on Road Encroachments and Traffic Congestion

In the major port city of Sihanoukville, located in southwestern Cambodia, efforts to rectify traffic congestion and chaotic roadside vending are being intensified. On September 5, 2026, the Traffic Order Police Office of the Sihanoukville Provincial Police Headquarters, in cooperation with the No. 2 District Police Station and city security forces, conducted educational and awareness campaigns for roadside vendors and drivers of vehicles parked illegally on public sidewalks, particularly around the Ta Pol Pass area. This initiative aims to improve the traffic congestion and disorder frequently observed along Road No. 801, specifically at the Ta Pol Pass on Preah Sihanouk Mountain. By ceasing sales activities on the road and parking vehicles on public sidewalks, the objective is to maintain traffic safety and order, thereby reducing the risks of congestion. Furthermore, this effort is expected to enhance the aesthetic appeal of Sihanoukville as a tourist city, fostering a cleaner and more organized urban environment. Colonel Chan Pich Rasmey, Chief of the Traffic Order Police Office, stated that this operation was carried out under the direction of Lieutenant General Ekk Sotha, Deputy Commissioner General of the National Police and Provincial Police Commissioner of Sihanoukville. Colonel Rasmey emphasized that maintaining public order on major roads not only helps alleviate traffic congestion but also significantly reduces the risk of traffic accidents. He added that this would provide a more favorable environment for both domestic and international tourists, as well as investors.
