BMKG Clarifies Surabaya-Madura Fault is Active, Not New

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has confirmed the existence of an active fault line between Surabaya and Madura, clarifying that it is an existing geological feature and not a new one as suggested in viral social media posts. The agency urged the public to respond wisely and enhance their disaster preparedness. Ricko Kardoso, Head of BMKG's Geophysical Station Class III Malang, stated on Tuesday (8/9) that the fault in question is indeed listed as active based on studies by the National Earthquake Study Center (Pusgen) in 2017 and updated in 2024. He advised that communities living in earthquake-prone areas like Indonesia should interpret seismic information prudently. Kardoso emphasized that research on earthquake hazards by experts is not intended to cause panic or fear but to improve knowledge and capacity on what to do before, during, and after an earthquake. He added that since the timing of earthquakes cannot be predicted by anyone, individual preparedness is crucial. The issue gained traction following a viral video uploaded by the account @gempa_dan_cuaca six days prior. The video, which garnered over 497,000 views, 15,900 likes, and 1,063 comments, claimed the existence of a new active fault in Surabaya. Indonesia is situated on the "Pacific Ring of Fire," a region prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity. The country has experienced significant seismic events in the past, underscoring the importance of public awareness and preparedness.
