'Thai National Costume' Fever in Japan: A New Window for Cultural Exchange

The Thai national costume, known as 'Chud Thai,' is generating significant buzz in Japan. The exhibition 'CHUD THAI KNOWLEDGE, CRAFTSMANSHIP AND PRACTICES OF THE THAI NATIONAL COSTUME,' held from September 17-18 at the Tokyo National Museum, attracted a large number of Japanese and foreign visitors, concluding with great success. The event was organized to foster cultural exchange between Thailand and Japan. A particularly novel approach that garnered attention was the creation of Japanese kimonos tailored from 'Pha Thai,' Thailand's traditional woven fabric. This initiative was inspired by a kimono made from Pha Thai, worn by Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya of Thailand. The exhibition showcased exquisite Thai craftsmanship and contemporary designs, featuring traditional Thai ornaments, intricate embroidery with gold and silver threads, and silk weaves with auspicious patterns. Ms. Sabeeda Taeset, Thailand's Minister of Culture, stated that this was the second event held abroad to promote the Thai national costume, following an earlier presentation in The Hague, Netherlands. She analyzed that the strong interest in Thai national costumes in Japan stemmed from the shared characteristic of both countries having their own unique traditional attire, making fashion a successful avenue for cultural diplomacy. Currently, the Thai government is pursuing the inscription of 'Chud Thai' onto the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, with the evaluation scheduled for December 2024. This endeavor represents a crucial step in promoting Thailand's traditional knowledge, craftsmanship, and identity on the global stage, ensuring its sustainable preservation as a living cultural heritage.
