Local Official Hailed Online for Daring River Rescue of Toddler

A local government official in Thai Nguyen Province has been widely praised online for his courageous act of plunging into a turbulent river to rescue a 4-year-old boy. Around 6:30 PM on July 26, Mr. Tran Quang Dang, Deputy Head of the Inspection Committee of the Party Committee of Dai Phuc commune, was walking along the bank of the Cong River in Dai Phuc commune when he spotted a young boy being swept away in the middle of the current. Without hesitation, Mr. Dang climbed over the railing and jumped about 3 meters down to the riverbank before swimming towards the middle of the river. The river was deep and the current was strong, with the riverbed's terrain making the approach difficult. After swimming about 100 meters, Mr. Dang finally reached the victim, pulled him to the riverbank, and administered first aid. "The river water was deep and the current was fast, causing me to lose my footing several times, but fortunately, I was able to reach the child quickly and save him," Mr. Dang recounted. The victim was identified as Nguyen Xuan Thanh, 4 years old, residing in Cau Thanh hamlet, who had slipped while playing near the river. Upon receiving the report, the boy's family arrived at the scene, received their son, and expressed their gratitude to Mr. Dang. Mr. Nguyen Tien Hung, Head of the Office of the Commune's Party Committee, who witnessed the incident, said his colleague only had time to hand over his phone before diving into the water. "Mr. Dang's decisive action demonstrates a sense of responsibility for the lives of the people," Mr. Hung stated. A video recording the incident quickly gained attention on social media. "Seeing the strong river current, everyone was afraid. The official's decision to jump in despite the danger is very admirable," commented one netizen. Mr. Dang stated that it was a natural reflex when seeing someone in distress. Through this incident, the commune official urged families to closely supervise their children in areas near rivers and streams to prevent drowning accidents. In Vietnam, drowning accidents often occur during the rainy season when rivers swell, and ensuring the safety of children is a particular concern. Mr. Dang's heroic actions have once again highlighted the sense of responsibility of public officials and their commitment to protecting citizens' safety within the community.
