Vietnam Proposes 2027 Tet and National Day Holiday Schedules

The Ministry of Interior has submitted a proposal to the Prime Minister regarding the holiday schedules for Tet (Lunar New Year) and National Day in 2027, consolidating opinions from various ministries and agencies. For civil servants and employees in the public sector, the proposed Tet holiday in 2027 will span from the 28th day of the 12th lunar month of the Year of the Horse (Binh Ngo) to the 5th day of the 1st lunar month of the Year of the Goat (Dinh Mui), which falls from February 4 to February 10, 2027. For National Day 2027, a four-day break is proposed, combining September 2nd (Friday) with the following day, September 3rd (Saturday), creating a holiday period from September 2nd to September 5th, 2027. In the private sector, employees are expected to have more flexible holiday arrangements. For Tet, employers will have several options to choose from regarding the number of days off at the end of the Year of the Horse. These include one day off at the end of the year and four days at the beginning of the new year (February 5-11, 2027); two days off at the end of the year and three days at the beginning of the new year (February 4-10, 2027); or three days off at the end of the year and two days at the beginning of the new year (February 3-9, 2027). These options are designed to ensure the minimum number of legal holidays are met and to facilitate employees' preparation for Tet. For National Day 2027, private sector employees can take a holiday on September 2nd and either September 1st (Thursday) or September 3rd (Saturday), as decided by their employer. Employers are required to notify their employees of the Tet and National Day holiday plans at least 30 days before implementation. If a weekly day off falls on a public holiday or Tet, companies must arrange a compensatory day off for employees on the next working day. The Ministry of Interior encourages businesses to adopt holiday periods for their employees similar to those for public officials, while ensuring full compliance with existing labor laws. Currently, Vietnam observes 12 paid public holidays, including New Year's Day (1 day), Tet (5 days), the Hung King's Commemoration Day (1 day), Liberation Day (April 30th - 1 day), International Workers' Day (May 1st - 1 day), National Day (2 days), and Vietnam Culture Day (1 day).
