Cambodia Ramps Up Preparations for International Conference on Tech Fraud
Cambodia is intensifying preparations for an international conference focused on combating technology-facilitated fraud, scheduled for September 23-24 in Phnom Penh. The event aims to foster international cooperation, coinciding with the nation's suspension of online gambling operations as part of its anti-fraud efforts.
PHNOM PENH, Sept 8, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia has stepped up preparations to host an international conference aimed at tackling technology‑facilitated fraud, with senior officials reviewing final arrangements this week. Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Vongsey Vissoth chaired the seventh meeting of the organising committee in Phnom Penh on Monday, focusing on the conference programme, communications, protocol, hospitality and security. Officials also discussed potential risks and measures to ensure the event runs smoothly. The International Conference on Combating Technology‑Facilitated Fraud will take place in Phnom Penh from September 23 to 24 under the theme “Working Together to Break the Chains and End Technology‑Facilitated Fraud.” It is expected to draw representatives from governments and international organisations across the region and beyond. The event comes as technology‑enabled scams spread across borders, requiring greater cooperation among states and institutions. Cambodia has announced new measures to curb cyber‑related crime, including suspending online gambling operations at all casinos nationwide from October. Interior Minister Sar Sokha said the move follows Prime Minister Hun Manet’s directive to strengthen controls on fraud and suspicious financial flows. Authorities say some online betting operations broadcast directly from casinos, complicating efforts to monitor activities and track funds. Officials argue the suspension will help reduce risks linked to gambling platforms and reinforce Cambodia’s broader campaign against technology‑facilitated fraud. With preparations entering their final stage, the government says the conference will highlight Cambodia’s determination to work with partners to confront a growing international challenge.
