Vietnam Joins ADMM+ Multinational Exercise, Boosting Regional Security

Vietnam has reinforced its commitment to regional security by participating in a multinational exercise under the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM+) framework, held in Indonesia. General Nguyen Tan Cuong, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army and Deputy Minister of National Defence, proposed key directions for ADMM and ADMM+ to further strengthen unity and cohesion within diversity while upholding ASEAN’s norms of conduct and principled stance on global and regional issues. This proposal underscores Vietnam's active role within ASEAN in contributing to regional order stability and development. Under its one-party system, the military plays a crucial role in national security and social order, making participation in international military exercises essential for modernization and global cooperation. The Vietnamese delegation also highlighted the increasing contributions of Vietnamese female peacekeepers serving in UN missions and headquarters. They noted the significant role these women play not only in operational duties but also in community engagement, civilian protection, medical services, and humanitarian assistance, indicating Vietnam's focus on diversifying its international contributions and promoting gender equality. This participation in the ADMM+ exercise reaffirms Vietnam's foreign policy, which prioritizes active engagement in regional security cooperation while pursuing economic growth. Vietnam aims to conduct diplomacy based on international norms and principles. While efforts to strengthen cooperation with China are evident, particularly in border regions, strategic tensions remain, notably concerning the South China Sea.
