Rains Boost Angat Dam Water Level, Easing Manila Supply Fears

NORZAGARAY, BULACAN, Philippines — Continuous moderate to heavy rains over the past several days have finally brought relief to the drying Angat Dam, raising its water level after the reservoir hit its lowest recorded elevation in history last week. As of Friday, Angat Dam’s water level climbed to 155.05 meters above sea level (masl). The rise in water level offers temporary relief from concerns over water shortages for the Angat Dam, a vital water source for nearly 20 million residents in Metro Manila. The dam, which is a primary water source for the Philippines, had been suffering from declining water levels in recent months, partly due to the effects of the El Niño phenomenon. Dam water levels are typically monitored as an indicator of the reservoir's operational capacity. While the 155.05-meter mark is still far from the dam's full capacity of 217 meters, it signifies a steady recovery from its historically lowest point recorded last week. Philippine authorities had implemented measures such as increasing supply from other sources and urging water conservation to mitigate the shortage. The recent rainfall is expected to contribute to stabilizing the water supply, alongside these ongoing efforts. The water level at Angat Dam is continuously monitored by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), and future rainfall patterns and water demand trends will influence the stability of Metro Manila's water supply.
