A devastating fire in the market area of Bapouda Village, East Paniai District, Central Papua, has resulted in the deaths of 11 people, including six children. Approximately 40 buildings were destroyed, and the cause of the fire is under ongoing investigation by the police.
A fire that swept through the market area in Bapouda Village, East Paniai District, Central Papua, has claimed the lives of 11 people, including six children. The blaze occurred around 00:25 WIT and rapidly spread to adjacent houses and kiosks, engulfing approximately 40 buildings. Kompol Henry J Manurung, Head of Public Relations Sub-division for Central Papua Police, confirmed that all victims have been evacuated to Paniai Hospital for further medical attention. The adult victims have been identified as Na (70), Wa (36), Ha (30), RF (28), and He (30). The six child victims are As (9), Ab (6), Ad (5), Ar (9), Ic (6), and AY (2). Police deployed a tactical vehicle to assist in the firefighting efforts, and the fire was eventually brought under control around 03:30 WIT. Manurung noted that the intensity of the fire and the close proximity of the buildings made the extinguishing process lengthy. Following the fire's suppression, police conducted an inspection of the affected houses and kiosks, where the 11 deceased victims were discovered with burn injuries.
