Vietnam on High Alert for Heavy Rains, Flash Floods, and Landslides; Construction Ministry Issues Urgent Response Measures

In response to the forecast of widespread heavy rainfall in Northern and North Central Vietnam, the Ministry of Construction has directed all units and localities to proactively and comprehensively implement measures to ensure the safety of infrastructure and transportation, as well as to protect the lives of citizens. It also calls for the readiness of personnel and equipment for rapid response and damage mitigation in the event of a disaster. Particularly in mountainous provinces such as Lao Cai and Son La, the response to heavy rains, flash floods, and landslides has become an urgent priority. Lao Cai province has already been actively implementing preventive measures against such natural disasters, while in Son La, the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee has issued an official dispatch directing response efforts. Furthermore, in Son La, police and military units are collaborating to expedite support activities for residents to prepare for disasters. Given that a large part of Vietnam's territory consists of low-lying areas and mountainous regions, and with climate change impacts being cited, preparedness for such natural disasters is crucial for the country's continued economic growth, ensuring the stable operation of its infrastructure and the safety of its citizens' lives. Under its one-party system, the state tends to concentrate resources on infrastructure development and disaster management. However, rapid and effective response at the local level is key to minimizing damage. Additionally, in northern regions bordering China, the risk of floods from transboundary rivers must also be considered.
