NUG investigates over 60 internal misconduct complaints amid governance restructuring

The National Unity Government (NUG) Home Affairs and Immigration Ministry announced that over 60 out of 100 complaints filed for misconduct have been investigated internally since the interim administration—-representing lawmakers elected in 2020 but ousted in the 2021 coup—was established in April 2021. “We are trying, as much as possible, to ensure that investigations are carried out properly and accurately,” NUG Deputy Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Kyaw Ni told DVB. He did not elaborate or provide any specific details about the cases that have been resolved or what actions have been taken against those found responsible. Over 100 complaints have been filed by both civilians and individuals working within the NUG against members of its administrative and defense bodies over allegations of abuse of power, extortion, arbitrary arrests, and sexual misconduct, according to Kyaw Ni. One high-profile case involved Kyi Pyar, the former permanent secretary at the NUG Prime Minister’s Office, who was suspended along with her husband, Nyi Nyi Min, in November 2025 after 12 of her former staff members accused the couple of corruption and other misconduct. Kyi Pyar maintains her innocence but resigned from the NUG on Feb. 21 citing health reasons after the NUG found her “not guilty” of alleged corruption and embezzlement on Feb. 18 and dismissed her husband as treasurer due to “nepotism.” The NUG established 17 ministries in 2021 but reduced this to 12 after disbanding four ministries in December. In August, it dissolved its Ministry of Human Rights and plans for it to become an independent human rights commission at an undisclosed date in the future. The NUG controls at least three towns in Sagaing Region, including Shwe Pyi Aye, Myothit, and Pinlebu, which have been seized by the People’s Defense Force (PDF) since 2021.
