Mawab, Davao de Oro earns first tourism accreditation in 67 years

The municipality of Mawab in Davao de Oro, Philippines, has achieved its first tourism accreditation in its 67-year history. Sabor by La Ela's Café Restaurant has been accredited by the Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT), allowing Mawab to transition from being merely a passage point to a potential tourist destination. Municipal tourism officer Michaella Paragua expressed her elation over the accreditation, stating, "We are no longer just a passageway; we finally have a DOT-accredited establishment that we can offer to tourists." Previously, Paragua admitted to feeling embarrassed during tourism meetings due to the lack of accredited establishments in Mawab. She emphasized that with this accreditation, Mawab is "no longer ZERO." Sabor by La Ela's Café Restaurant, an agri-tourism establishment located in Mawab, formerly known as the "Gateway to the Golden Province" of Davao de Oro, began operations in 2022. It offers diners a view of the rice fields while enjoying food and drinks. An inspection by DOT found that the establishment meets the minimum standard requirements for restaurant accreditation. Mawab is strategically situated, bordering Tagum City (capital of Davao del Norte) and serving as a transit point for travelers heading north to Nabunturan (capital of Davao de Oro) or even to the Agusan provinces. To its southeast lies the highway to Mati City in Davao Oriental, a known tourist spot for its beaches. Historically, Mawab has been more of a "passageway" for these destinations. The municipality noted that other tourism establishments in the area are also applying for accreditation, signaling a positive outlook for local tourism, business, and livelihood opportunities.
