Cambodia Denies Government Restructuring; PM Hun Manet Dismisses Social Media Rumors

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has categorically dismissed rumors circulating on some social media platforms regarding the reduction or consolidation of government ministries and institutions. The Prime Minister clarified that there is no policy to merge six ministries that have overlapping functions, as has been suggested online. Speaking at a ceremony to distribute land deeds to residents in Kandal province's Kien Svay district on July 29, 2026, Prime Minister Hun Manet stated, "In recent days, there have been discussions about reducing ministries, merging ministries, and downgrading ministries to general departments. This is a strange issue, and as Prime Minister, I am unaware of it. However, I want to clarify to those who created this story that there is no such policy change." He further elaborated, "There is no policy to reduce ministries and institutions. Instead, we aim to strengthen the capacity of each ministry and institution to align with the evolution of society and technology. For instance, in some areas, certain departments that are unnecessary or overlapping might be reduced." Prime Minister Hun Manet also urged officials not to worry or be distressed by this matter, stating, "Policies have already been laid out, and each ministry and institution needs to analyze its functions and work towards consolidation to ensure efficiency." This statement comes amid growing interest in organizational restructuring as the Cambodian government aims for administrative efficiency. While streamlining and improving administrative efficiency have been discussed under previous administrations, significant large-scale reorganizations have not materialized. The Prime Minister's remarks are seen as an effort to prevent confusion caused by speculation and to clearly communicate the government's stance.
