Class Suspensions Hit Northern Philippines Amid Habagat, Tropical Depression Maymay

MANILA, Philippines (Update 7, 10:01 p.m.) — Several local government units have announced class suspensions for Friday, August 7, due to the continuing effects of the southwest monsoon or habagat and Tropical Depression Maymay (international name: Kujira). Maymay made landfall in Magsingal, Ilocos Sur before dawn Thursday and moved over Bangued, Abra later in the morning as it crossed Northern Luzon. By Thursday afternoon, however, PAGASA said the cyclone had weakened into a tropical depression while moving east-southeast over the Cordillera region. Signal No. 1 remains hoisted over parts of Northern Luzon, while the weather bureau warned that the combined effects of Maymay and the southwest monsoon will continue to bring heavy rains and strong winds.
