US Reiterates High Attention to Cambodia-Thailand Border Developments, Praises Cambodia's Peaceful Resolution Efforts

The United States has reiterated its high attention to the developments of the situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border and praised Cambodia's commitment to resolving conflicts peacefully through dialogue and diplomacy. This was stated during a courtesy call between Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of the U.S. Embassy in Cambodia, Ms. Aleksandra Zittle, and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Prak Sokhonn, on July 9, 2026. The U.S. stance of continuing to monitor the evolving situation on the Cambodia-Thailand border comes as the situation along the border line in some areas remains fragile. This is due to the Thai military's continued illegal activities infringing upon Cambodia's sovereignty, despite an existing ceasefire agreement. Concurrently, approximately 20,000 Cambodian citizens have not yet been able to return to their homes, as some of their residences and living areas are occupied by the Thai military through the deployment of barbed wire and shipping containers. A press release from the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that during the meeting, Mr. Prak Sokhonn briefed Ms. Aleksandra Zittle on the recent developments of the Cambodia-Thailand border situation and reiterated Cambodia's stance of resolving conflicts peacefully in accordance with international law and existing bilateral agreements. He also expressed gratitude to the United States for its support of peace, stability, and constructive engagement in the region, as well as its financial assistance to Cambodia. In response, Ms. Zittle reaffirmed the high attention of the United States to the evolving situation regarding the Cambodia-Thailand border and praised Cambodia's strong commitment to seeking peaceful solutions through dialogue and diplomacy. Through this meeting, both sides reaffirmed their joint commitment to maintaining close dialogue and further expanding cooperation to promote mutual interests and contribute to peace, stability, and prosperity in the region. Furthermore, both sides exchanged views on enhancing the long-standing partnership between Cambodia and the United States and promoting cooperation in various sectors for mutual benefit. Additionally, the parties noted the positive momentum in Cambodia-U.S. relations in recent years, reflected in the expansion of trade and investment, growth in people-to-people ties, regular high-level exchanges, and strengthened cooperation in numerous fields, including defense, transnational crime, economic development, and cultural heritage preservation. It is worth noting that the United States played an active role in urging both Cambodian and Thai parties to engage in negotiations and seek peaceful solutions, leading to a ceasefire agreement that was organized in December 2025.
