Cambodia Advocates for Enhanced International Cooperation on 'One Health' Amidst New Diseases and Drug Resistance
A senior Cambodian health official called for strengthened international cooperation on the 'One Health' approach, integrating human, animal, plant, and environmental health to address emerging infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance. Speaking at an FAO conference in Rome, the official highlighted Cambodia's progress and urged for sustainable funding and integrated surveillance systems.
YOK Sambath, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Health and Chair of the Inter-Ministerial Coordination Committee for One Health (IMCC-OH), stated that addressing emerging diseases, antimicrobial resistance, climate change, and environmental degradation requires stronger cooperation between human, animal, plant, and environmental health sectors. She made these remarks at the FAO Global Conference on the 'One Health' initiative, focusing on agro-food systems, held in Rome from September 21 to 23, 2026. During the conference, the Secretary of State delivered an intervention on agro-food systems, highlighting Cambodia's progress in strengthening multi-sectoral 'One Health' governance through IMCC-OH, along with enhancing surveillance systems, laboratory capacity, human resource development, and efforts to tackle Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). She also called for increased global solidarity and partnership, sustainable financing, integrated surveillance systems, innovation, and investment in preparedness. This, she explained, aims to translate political commitments into concrete actions for better human, animal, and ecosystem health, as well as more resilient agro-food systems. Cambodia stands ready to collaborate with regional and global partners to advance the 'One Health' initiative towards a safer, healthier, and more sustainable future.
