Driver Dead, 3 Hurt as Van Plunges into Ravine in Benguet

BAGUIO CITY — A 62-year-old driver died while his three passengers were hurt after a van plunged into a 10-meter-deep ravine in the Benguet farming town of Atok on Wednesday. The accident occurred at 11:10 a.m. along Km. 38 in Barangay Abiang, but police were notified at about 1:40 p.m. Initial police investigation showed that the van was traversing the road when it suddenly fell into the ravine. The driver, identified as a resident of Barangay Abiang, was declared dead on arrival at the nearest hospital. The three passengers, whose identities were withheld, sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital for medical treatment. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident, including possible mechanical failure or human error. The area where the accident happened is known for its steep terrain and winding roads, which can be hazardous, especially during inclement weather. Local officials are urging drivers to exercise extreme caution when traveling in mountainous areas and to ensure their vehicles are in good working condition.
