Cambodia Reiterates Commitment to Peaceful Border Resolution with Thailand

PHNOM PENH, August 8, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn has reaffirmed Phnom Penh’s commitment to resolving its border dispute with Thailand peacefully, in line with international law and existing bilateral accords. Prak Sokhonn made the remarks during talks with Belgium’s Ambassador to Cambodia, Michel Parys, at the foreign ministry on August 6. He briefed the envoy on recent developments along the frontier and stressed that Cambodia would continue to pursue dialogue and legal mechanisms to settle the issue. The meeting also reviewed bilateral ties, with Prak Sokhonn hailing the long‑standing friendship and expanding cooperation between the two countries. He welcomed growing trade links, noting Belgium ranked as Cambodia’s sixth‑largest EU trading partner in 2025, and praised Brussels’ support through the 2022–2026 Cooperation Programme covering agriculture, healthcare, education, demining, environment and social protection. Ambassador Parys outlined Belgium’s ongoing projects and preparations for a new 2027–2031 programme. Both sides highlighted the upcoming 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027 as a chance to deepen cooperation. The officials also discussed multilateral issues, including Belgium’s backing for Cambodia’s hosting of the 20th Francophonie Summit in November under the theme “Reinvesting in Peace for Shared Prosperity and Lasting Stability.” Talks ended in a cordial atmosphere, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening Cambodia‑Belgium relations and broadening cooperation.
