Vietnam to Ease Music Copyright Fee Collection Bottlenecks from July 2026

Vietnam's government has decided to implement new regulations for the collection of copyright and related rights fees in the music sector, effective July 1, 2026. These adjustments specifically target businesses such as cafes, restaurants, and hotels, aiming to resolve the long-standing "bottlenecks" in copyright fee collection. The collection of music copyright fees is essential for protecting the legitimate rights of creators and ensuring the sustainable development of the entire music industry. However, in Vietnam, fair and effective collection has been a challenge due to the complexity of the collection process and a lack of understanding among businesses. With the proliferation of digital platforms, the forms of music usage have diversified, raising questions about copyright protection. These revised standards are intended to create a collection system that better reflects the current situation and promotes appropriate compensation for music creators. This is expected to stimulate investment in the music industry and enhance the competitiveness of Vietnam's cultural content sector as a whole. Nhan Dan, the official newspaper of the Communist Party of Vietnam, views this move as a significant step towards the healthy development of the music market.
