The water level at Angat Dam, a primary water source for Metro Manila, has risen by over 3 meters following a series of rains, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). As of Thursday, the dam's water level reached 154.33 meters, an increase of 3.48 meters from Wednesday. The rainfall was attributed to a low-pressure area (LPA) and other weather systems. Despite this increase, the water level remains below the critical operating level of 160 meters and has not fully recovered since July 4, based on historical data. Rosalie C. Pagulayan, assistant weather services chief of PAGASA, stated that the past 24 hours of rainfall contributed to the dam's water level rise. Ms. Pagulayan also noted that light rains have been recorded over the dam's watershed since July 23, influencing soil moisture and the watershed's hydrological response. She added that a slight increase could be expected if localized thunderstorms occur within the watershed. PAGASA forecasts that the Cagayan Valley and Cordillera Administrative Region may experience easterlies in the next 24 hours, with localized thunderstorms also expected in other parts of the country. The agency cautioned the public against potential flooding and landslides during severe thunderstorms. The water level at Angat Dam is crucial for Metro Manila's water supply, irrigation, and hydropower. Fluctuations in its level directly impact the Philippine economy and the daily lives of its citizens, with water scarcity being a significant concern during dry seasons.
