Cambodia and Thailand Hold Informal Border Meeting to Ease Tensions
The Cambodia-Thailand Military Border Committee held an informal meeting in Oddar Meanchey province, confirming cooperation to prevent border territorial issues and misunderstandings. The Military Border Committee (RBC) of Cambodia and Thailand held an informal meeting on July 15, 2026, near the Choam-Sangam International Checkpoint in O'Yadav district, Oddar Meanchey province, Cambodia. The meeting aimed to ease tensions and prevent misunderstandings along the border between the two countries. Cambodian delegation leader Brigadier General Nit Narong, Chairman of the RBC Cambodia Secretariat, and Thai delegation leader Brigadier General Kamphaknak Waphansue, Chairman of the RBC Thailand Secretariat, confirmed their commitment to cooperation for peaceful and timely resolution of issues. During the meeting, the Cambodian side urged the Thai side to cease unilateral activities such as road construction, territorial expansion, and mine-laying in areas under Cambodian sovereignty and in undemarcated zones. Cambodia emphasized the importance of commencing demarcation and boundary delimitation work by the Joint Border Commission (JBC) as soon as possible, in line with existing agreements between the two countries, as stated in the Joint Declaration of December 27, 2025. Furthermore, Cambodia proposed careful verification of incidents such as shootings and explosions between both sides to prevent misunderstandings and unnecessary escalation of tensions, urging the implementation of preventive measures. Cambodia also requested Thailand's cooperation in strengthening discipline among its frontline forces to prevent any provocative actions, including gunfire, mine-laying, and inappropriate language. The importance of jointly combating the spread of fake news and disinformation, particularly that which incites hatred and animosity, was also highlighted to foster mutual trust and create an environment conducive to peaceful resolution. Cambodia reiterated its firm commitment to fully and strictly abide by the Joint Declaration of the 3rd Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) on December 27, 2025, the Joint Statement on the Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand on October 26, 2025, and other relevant agreements, in order to seek peaceful, just, and lasting solutions in accordance with international law and existing treaties and agreements between the two countries.
