Danny Setiawan, West Java's First Bureaucrat Governor, Passes Away

H. Danny Setiawan, who served as West Java Governor for the 2003-2008 period, passed away on Saturday (19/9) at the age of 81. His passing leaves a historical mark for Indonesian civil servants (ASN), as the late governor was the first purely career bureaucrat to ascend to the highest seat in the West Java Provincial Government. West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi, who announced the news of Danny Setiawan's death on his social media account, stated, "I believe Danny Setiawan is an expert in many good works that have been done for the progress of West Java province, both when he was the Secretary of the Regional Secretary and when he was the governor." Born on August 28, 1945, Danny made a unique history in the leadership map of West Java. His wife, Rinania Sastrawiguna, once revealed her husband's track record while leading from Gedung Sate. "Mr. Danny is the first career official to become the Governor of West Java, because previously all had a military background," she said. Danny's career journey was long and multi-tiered. He began his service as the Head of the Cimarga District, Lebak Regency in 1968, and after serving in various roles, including Deputy KPS Ransiki in Manokwari, he was entrusted to be the Regional Secretary of the Lebak Regency from 1977 to 1984. His career continued to rise within the West Java Provincial Government, holding positions such as Head of the Social and Cultural Division of Bappeda, Head of the Finance Bureau, Head of the Regional Development Bureau, and Head of the Regional Revenue Service (Dispenda) of West Java (1994-1997). He was appointed as the Regional Secretary (Sekda) of West Java Province in 1998. The peak of his career was achieved when he was inaugurated as the 12th Governor of West Java, accompanied by Deputy Governor Nu'man Abdul Hakim, for a term of office from June 13, 2003, to June 13, 2008. Academically, a graduate of the Bandung National Government Academy (APDN) and Malang Institute of Government Sciences (IIP), he earned a Master's degree in Public Policy from Padjadjaran University (Unpad) in 2000. He also received leadership education at the University of Pittsburgh, USA, and Sepacad ABRI at Rindam VIII Brawijaya. For his dedication, the deceased was awarded state honors, including the Satyalancana Karya Satya (1998), Satyalancana Wira Karya (2000), and Satyalancana Wira Karya Koperasi (2004) from the President of the Republic of Indonesia.
