Leik Myar Naung Dam Breaks on Ngwun River, Emergency Evacuation Urged

In Leik Myar Naung Township, Ayeyarwady Region, around 10:45 PM on July 30, approximately 20 feet of the embankment of the dam on the Ngwun River broke due to water pressure. As a result, river water has entered the low-lying wards of Leik Myar Naung Township, and the Ayeyarwady Region government issued a notice on the morning of July 31 urging for emergency evacuation. Residents living in low-lying wards and near agricultural lands that could be flooded have been notified to immediately evacuate to safe high ground, factories, schools, prayer halls, and relevant relief camps. It has also been notified to prioritize the evacuation of valuable documents, medicines, food, the elderly, and children to safe locations, and to turn off the main electrical switches in their homes. In case of difficulties, the Ayeyarwady Region government has urged the public to contact ward/village administrative bodies, rescue teams, and fire brigade members immediately for assistance, and to follow the emergency instructions of the relevant authorities precisely without panic, and to evacuate to safe places as quickly as possible. Currently, search and rescue teams led by the Chief of the Ayeyarwady Region Fire Services Department, in cooperation with relevant organizations, are carrying out rescue operations for households in the flooded wards of Leik Myar Naung Township, namely Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, as well as in Htan Gone Village, Kyun Tet Village, Kwanchangone Village, and Nyang Pin We Village, according to a statement from the Myanmar Fire Brigade.
