Indonesian Mother Detained in Malaysia Over Death of 5-Year-Old Son Found With Bruises

Malaysian police have detained an Indonesian migrant worker (PMI), the mother of a five-year-old boy who died in Gelugor. Head of the North East Police, ACP Abdul Rozak Muhammad, stated that in addition to one Indonesian citizen (WNI), his party also detained the PMI's lover, a Bangladeshi in his 30s, and two others. "The police have now detained four people to assist in the investigation, including the child's mother, an Indonesian citizen [WNI], and her boyfriend who is a Bangladeshi," he told Bernama on Sunday. Rozak added that the detention was carried out after officers conducted an autopsy, the results of which indicated the boy died with injuries to his head and body due to blunt force trauma. The case began when an unemployed Bangladeshi man took his girlfriend's son to the nearest clinic after the boy vomited in their rented apartment in Gelugor around 10 am on Thursday, July 23. The boy was then transferred to Penang Hospital. Unfortunately, his life could not be saved. Penang Hospital staff then made a police report because they found bruises on the child. According to Bernama's report, the deceased boy was the child of Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) who earned a living in Malaysia as restaurant employees and a Rohingya man who died in 2025. This incident highlights concerns surrounding the safety of children and the vulnerable position of migrant workers in Malaysia.
